It was my honour to proclaim Oct 7 Habitat for Humanity North Island day. Thank you for providing home ownership to 55 local families. The impact this has on our community is profound and even more for the children and their parents who have safe, secure and affordable homes.
Since opening its doors in 2004, Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North has played a crucial role in building safe, affordable housing for families in need across the region.
In the past 20 years, the organization has empowered 56 families by providing them with a safe and affordable place to live. To date, it has built 51 homes.
In a unanimous agreement, the mayors of Vancouver Island North have officially declared Oct. 7 as Habitat for Humanity Day, celebrating the organization’s 20th anniversary. This proclamation coincides with World Habitat Day, a day recognized globally to reflect on the basic human right to adequate shelter.
Courtenay Mayor Bob Wells said the city is proud to recognize Habitat for Humanity’s incredible work over the past two decades.
“Their dedication to building homes, communities, and hope has had a profound impact on our region,” Wells said in a media release. “Declaring Oct. 7 as Habitat for Humanity Day is a testament to the difference they’ve made in the lives of so many.”
The official proclamation will be marked by a special fundraiser called “20 Years, $20,000.” All the money raised will go toward the organization’s next build site in Campbell River. The ongoing need for affordable housing and the role that Habitat for Humanity continues to play are extremely vital in addressing this critical issue, states the release.
“We are deeply honoured by this proclamation,” said Stefano Tromba, the organization’s communications director. “As we celebrate 20 years of service, we are reminded of the power of community and the importance of ensuring everyone has a safe place to call home. We look forward to continuing our work and making an even greater impact in the years to come.”
